Facilities
JKIA has three sections that are meant to handle arrivals and departures. Sections one and two are reserved for international flights and those going in for domestic flights see your way to section three. All check-ins for travelers occur through section one and two. The check-in counters mainly operate on the Common Use Terminal Equipment system.
Jomo Kenyatta Airport has eight gates in the departure area. All aircraft are boarded via boarding bridges and international arrivals disembark via the same gates. Expansion plans for the Airport.
A Canadian-Kenyan Consortium led by Queen’s Quay Architects International won the consulting contract for renovation and expansion for JKIA in 2004.
After evaluation and conceptual recommendations of this facility in 2005, the detailed design and tender documents phase were approved.
Valued at 115 million dollars, the bulk cost of this expansion project was intended to be provided by the World Bank funding (10%) and revenue collected by the government.
Kenya Airports Authority announced the final plans for the expansion of JKIA in October 2005. Its expansion doubled the size from 25,662m² to 55,222m² with four new terminal buildings. Aircraft parking was increased from 200,000m² to over 300,000m² and additional taxiways.
