Travelers use several means to get out of Kampala to other parts of the country. One of them is bus transport. You can board a bus in Kampala and travel to northern, western, and eastern Uganda safely.

It is spacious and raised from the ground than a taxi thus offering pretty views of the roadside scenery. If you hope to use this option for your transportation, make sure to know this information highlighted below.

Bus fares are favorable

If you need to travel comfortably and cheaply from Kampala, going on the bus is the best option. It is a shared means of transport. This makes it less expensive than private transport. Know that when you hire a car or taxicab, you have to meet all the costs.

If that car carries seven passengers and each seat is 30000 Uganda shillings. You will pay the charge for all seats which is not the case for shared transport.

For those who prefer privacy to money paid, this is not an option for you. Buses from Kampala to Gulu, Malaba, Mbarara, Kasese, and other areas carry both locals and foreign travelers.

Prices differ

Bus fares in Kampala depend on the length of the journey. Short trips like Kampala to Jinja, Mpigi, Hoima, Masindi, Mbarara, and Fort portal cost between 10,000 – 60,000 Uganda shillings. Longer trips to the upcountry and beyond borders cost between 60,000 – 150,000 shillings.

Book in advance

You have to book your ticket in advance and make sure to be at the bus stand in time such that you don’t miss your trip. Visit the office of the company you choose. After reserving, the agent will issue you a ticket you must present when boarding. Tickets are available in different categories including economy and VIP class.

Bus terminals

There are various bus terminals in Kampala. These stands dot the areas of Kisenyi, Namirembe, Bakuli and Namayiba. You can visit their offices and secure your ticket.

Getting there

For those who are within the suburbs of Kampala, you can take a Boda Boda up to the Kisenyi bus terminal. If you prefer an improved option, a special taxi is the best. From Entebbe airport, you can get a taxicab and travel direct up to a bus stand in Kampala. The airport taxi rates from Entebbe are friendly.

Scheduled trips

Bus operators in Kampala offer only scheduled trips to various regions of the nation. These trips are active 24 hours. You can choose to travel during the day or at night depending on your travel plans and needs.

Be aware of thieves

Kampala is a congested city. Its streets are ever active and crowded with locals who carry out different activities. Some thieves target people’s gadgets. Be aware of these pickpocketers. Try to keep all your gadgets away from their access.
