History

Between 1999-2001, the airport underwent a large renovation, the former parking lots were cleared and a new terminal expansion was built.

This new structures included check-in areas, airport mall, multi-story parking and a new entrance to the airport.

Kuwait International Airport handled more than nine million passengers per year until a new general aviation terminal was completed in 2008.

By the end of 2008, the airport was modified and a small building known as Sheikh Saad General Aviation Terminal was constructed.

The main reason for this new structure was to handle scheduled services of Wataniya Airways and general aviation traffic.

Later in 2011, the Department of Civil Aviation announced the proposal to expand Kuwait International Airport such that it can handle more aircraft and passengers annually.

On October 3, 2011, the directorate general of civil aviation approved the construction process and this increased the annual passenger handling to 14 million passengers.

This was the first phase and it encompassed an option of expanding the capacity to 25 million passengers.
