Things Required to Get a Work Permit in Uganda

Class A (Government & Diplomatic services)

Applicants for this class must be contracted for service in the government of Uganda or diplomats hired for service in the country.

Requirements:

Cover letter from the Embassy and a supportive letter from the ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Class A2 (Government contractors)

You need to apply for this permit if you are on Government contracts including those serving in Government tertiary institutions.

Academic qualifications for professionals

Class B (Investment in Agriculture)

For any one intending to invest in agriculture or animal husbandry, this is the right permit to apply for.

Requirements:

Attach Covering letter from company
Land title
Uganda Investment Authority License
Letter from Ministry of Agriculture regarding intended agriculture venture
Recommendation from LC’s or RDC’s office
Work plan / Feasibility study of the project undertaken

Class C (Mining)

This is for those who are planning to invest in mining.

Requirements:

License issued by Ministry of Natural Resources
Articles and memorandum of Association
Supportive letter from Ministry of Natural Resources

Class D (Business & Trade)

Applicants for this should be persons intending to start a business or trade in Uganda

Class E (Manufacturers)

Applicants should be those planning to engage in manufacturing business.

Class F (Professionals)

Requirements:

Registration with the relevant professional agency e.g. Association of medical Practitioners

Class G1 (Volunteers, NGO Workers, and Missionaries)

Requirements:

Qualifications

Class G2 (Employees)

Class G2 is for anyone intending to work as an employee in Uganda. All Applicants under this category can only enter Uganda after grant and payment for their work permits

Work Permit Renewal

Employment of EAC national under the EAC common market protocol.

Workers allowed to work in Uganda under the EAC Common Market Protocol include Chairmen of companies; Civil engineers; Aircraft and ship controllers and technicians.
You should fill work permit form and fulfill requirements under the specific category of work permit sought. (Refer to categories above)
EAC nationals who obtain work of more than 90 days should apply for work permit within 15 days from date of concluding contract of employment.
Special pass should be sought for employment of not more than 90 days.
Special pass will be issued to EAC nationals pending issuance of work permits.
Employers should furnish immigration with annual return of EAC workers in establishment.
EAC workers who change employment should notify immigration within 15 days of change of employment and should apply for new work permits.
If a worker ceases employment, for which work permit was issued, he/ she must notify immigration within 15 days of cessation and apply for pass to stay in Uganda or leave the country.
